August 2010: a real clunker on the new-car sales front

Automotive News -- Any way you look at it, August U.S. auto sales disappointed. Compared with “clunker August” a year ago, sales fell 21 percent. Compared with the month before, volume dropped 5 percent. Even seasonally-adjusted, it was the worst month since February.

U.S. sales totaled 997,574 sales in August, down from 1,050,110 in July. A year ago, driven by federal cash incentives of $3,500 to $4,500, August sales hit 1.26 million.

The seasonally adjusted annual selling rate calculated by the Automotive News Data Center was 10.8 million, the first month since January and February to fall below 11.1 million.

Didn't some report just say that manufacturing was way up in August, I guess that report was just for Wall Street, gave them an excuse to run up stocks and oil, even though the report meant nothing, it doesn't take much to rally Wall Street.

I would love to be able to buy a new car but it's not in my meager budget. I'm driving a car that is 13 years old and as long as it's safe and gets me to where I need to go it's ok with me.

This article paints a real bad picture.

But look at the figures. They aren't all that low. From last Feb. down only .3 million out of 10 million!!

And it only down what 10 or 15 percent from the Clunker program last year.
Yea down, but in today's time, not all that bad.

I certainly wouldn't expect it to go up!!

If Obama sends me $30000, I'll go buy a new car. Wait...why don't you send it to me; that's where Obama would get it from anyway.

Oh that! It was Barry spending money the government does not have and the taxpayers will be paying back for years and years to come. And, which ‘clunker’ was that?

When people don't "need" to replace their car and there is no "government incentive" to buy a new one and when people "can't afford" to buy a new one, it is no surprise to me that new car purchases have fallen.

Maybe if someone would build a car that everyone could afford, and was nice to look at, and got good mileage, and wasn't recalled all the time, and was safe, and reliable, and in nice colors, with all of the amenaties...oh well...

I've been getting flyers from local dealers to by my used car. Hmmm, I think they see a bigger market in used cars. Or they are trying to take business for private online sales.

njerald -- Ah, yes, another article leaning towards liberalism, which is the direction that President Obama, Princess Pelosi and Prince Reid want to lead this country. It'll only be a matter of time before this nation hits the bottom of the barrel and becomes a nation of second class citizens. We're already seeing our educational system dropping in the rankings when compared to the other nations of the world. The upcoming 2010 elections can't happen soon enough, in order to turn the tide on this run away, completely out of control, spend, spend and spend mentality that President Obama and his court have been touting these past several months.
