Toyota Seeks 2010 Recovery for Most of Lost U.S. Market Shar

Bloomberg.com -- Toyota Motor Corp. set a 2010 goal of regaining most of the U.S. market share lost in the past two months after global recalls of 8 million vehicles damped demand, the No. 2 U.S. sales executive said.

The target would be as much as 16.7 percent of new-car deliveries, said Don Esmond, senior vice president of Toyota’s U.S. sales unit. That would be the same level as in 2008, and less than 2009’s 17 percent, when Toyota trailed only General Motors Co., according to industry researcher Autodata Corp.

Esmond’s plan would require a rebound from Toyota’s U.S. share of 13.4 percent through February. With inventory replenished after the recalls, he said, no-interest loans and lease discounts helped boost sales through the first 10 days of March by about 40 percent over a year earlier.

They have taken a dump on consumers worldwide. Lower prices and fancy commercials won't do you any good when you have sudden acceleration and can't control your Toyota.

It's like I told a Dodge salesman about 15 years ago as I waited for repairs to my company owned vehicle(a K-car) that had shut down and had to be towed in for the third time. He came up to me with his sunshine smile and said, "Let me put in a new Dodge today!"

I told him rather bluntly that I wouldn't have one if they were giving them away.

After seeing some of the disclosures from their ex-lawyer, if any of the allegations can be substantiated, they ought to be tried under the RICO act and banned from doing business in the US.

This procedure Toyota is taking to try to encourage customers to buy their autos again after going through such a recall is no surprice. Any business today wants to have sales.

It is for sure that it will take time for Toyota to have there sales come to normal, but as long as the recall is still around and some autos still sufferproblems even after being recalled, it is unsure how long it will take.

I would be a bit hesitant to purchase a Toyota at this time unless; a) I got an incredibly great deal and b) they gave me extended coverage so I would not have to pay for any repairs. Otherwise, I'm sticking with Honda.

Wasn't it P.T. Barnum that said something like there is a sucker born every minute or a fool and his money are soon parted? Anyone who buys a Toyota under the present circumstances falls into both categories.

I don't think wegman's comment is very substantive. The "real" Toyota will soon be exposed and then maybe he won't be so proud anymore.

It is not the recalls so much, that have hurt Toyota. It is the evidence that Toyota, like all the other large corporations that I know of, has lied, and lied, and lied. Their former attorney has managed to get the evidence subpoenaed by congress. It will now come out. Of course, one must remember that this merely means that Toyota has been kicked off of their lofty perch. We now know that Toyota is as bad as the rest of the large corporations. The likelihood of Toyota ever regaining the confidence level that they once enjoyed, I believe is nil. May this be a lesson to any other corporation that might ever gain the respect that Toyota once held.

As long as this is a once in a decade type event, and not Detroit's every other year type of disaster, Toyota will emerge stronger, because this caused them to review some stuff.

If it recurs, or some of Toyota's claims are definitively refuted, then Toyota becomes just another car company. (Considering Toyota's enemies, Big Labor and their government allies, the tort bar, Naderites and the like Toyota has to be definitively proved wrong. If it is in doubt, the Toyota fans will consider the source and side with Toyota).

Proud Toyota owner.

Local sales jumped dramatically from January to February. Why no mention of the Chevy or other concurrent recalls?

Toyota refuses to take full responsibility for their actions and are still in denial mode. This is not a simple recall as has happened with every car company (and other companies) and will continue to happen in the future. People make mistakes that need to be corrected, but this is way beyond that. They have betrayed the public's trust by lying and then treated us like idiots with their ridiculous PR campaign on how this or that person loves their Toyota. How insulting. For them right now it is all about PR damage control. They don't care how many people may die or are injured by their products. All they are worried about now is regaining market share.

I am not a buy American or buy Japanese or buy Korean person. I am a person who will only buy from a company I can trust, which is not Toyota. Wake up people.

As we know speculators come in all forms and in many industries. Mr. Esmond is one form.

We will see if Toyota can fix the problem, which to date they have not,and if people will be able to trust letting their loved ones drive or ride in vehicles that randomly are out of control and have killed and injured.

The buying public will decide and, hopefully, U.S. manufacturers will provide worthy alternatives, as they have in the past.

Vehicle sales, millions of jobs and manufacturers trust, it would seem, is waiting for U.S. manufacturers to step up and lead the way.

Go Toyota. American built by Non-union American labor. Even with all of their trouble they still expect sales to go up this year. Why? Because Americans have an attention span of about 2 minutes. How do you think we keep electing all those moron politiciancs who screw up?

Seems like a reasonable goal for them and it would be a huge bonus if they also were a little more forthright about the issues that seem to be plaguing their cars.
